Open interest in real-world asset perpetual futures has reached approximately $20 billion, according to data from CryptoRank as of October 26, 2026. The figure represents a 192% increase since June of that year.
Rapid Growth in Two Months
The expansion has been swift. CryptoRank recorded RWA perpetual open interest at $9.3 billion in August 2026. By late October, the figure was approaching $20 billion, more than doubling in roughly two months.
The market share growth is equally striking. RWA contracts made up 6% of total perpetual open interest at the start of 2026. By late September, that share had grown to 24%, meaning roughly one dollar in every four sitting in perpetual futures was tied to a real-world asset rather than a native crypto token.
How RWA Perpetuals Work
A perpetual future is a derivative contract that allows traders to bet on an asset's price with leverage and no expiry date. Open interest measures the total value of those contracts still outstanding. RWA perps apply this structure to tokenized versions of traditional assets, including equities, commodities, and indices.
Centralized Exchanges Lead Overall
Centralized exchanges control 71% of RWA perpetual open interest, according to the data. Their strength lies in contracts tied to equities and precious metals, including single stocks, gold, and silver.
Decentralized exchanges account for the remaining 29% of open interest. DEXs hold a leading position in equity index derivatives, with platforms such as Trade.xyz and Variational becoming key players in volume and open interest rankings for RWA perps.
Appeal of Tokenized Assets
The surge reflects a broader push throughout 2026 to tokenize real-world assets. For traders, the appeal is convenience: a crypto account holder can trade tokenized equities or gold exposure in the same place they trade Bitcoin, often around the clock.
The growth from 6% to 24% of total perpetual open interest within the first three quarters of the year suggests substantial demand rather than early-stage experimentation.
