S&P 500 Rally Led by Triple-Digit Gains in Tech, Biotech, and Energy Stocks

The S&P 500 has risen roughly 12% in 2026, driven by a broader stock market rally fueled heavily by artificial intelligence infrastructure and memory narratives. Within the index, however, the leading components have posted extraordinary, triple-digit gains.

SanDisk (NASDAQ: SNDK) leads the index as the number one stock, recording a 574% year-to-date gain. The surge is driven by strong investor enthusiasm for flash memory and storage technology utilized in data-center workloads.

Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA) claims the second spot with a 388% return over the same period. The biotechnology company experienced a major spike after positive late-stage results for its experimental melanoma treatment, which caused the stock to jump 140% on August 19.

Technology and Semiconductor Stocks Dominate

Semiconductor and technology companies occupy a dominant position among the top-performing S&P 500 stocks. Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE: DELL) has gained 248%, and Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) has climbed 229.26% amid growing analyst confidence in the memory industry.

Other notable performers include Seagate Technology (NASDAQ: STX) with a 193% rise, Marvell Technology (NASDAQ: MRVL) up 163%, Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC) up 146%, and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) also up 146%. Intel's performance is accompanied by insider sales reflecting internal confidence in the firm's trajectory.

Optical Transceivers and Energy Sector Strength

Rounding out the top ten are Lumentum Holdings (NASDAQ: LITE) and Marathon Petroleum (NYSE: MPC), both up 120%. Lumentum has capitalized on heavy demand for its 1.6-terabit optical transceivers, with management focusing on a new North Carolina facility to target a $75 billion market.

Meanwhile, Marathon Petroleum exceeded Wall Street expectations in its Q2 2026 report released on August 4. The company benefited from Middle-Eastern conflicts and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which contributed to an almost fourfold increase in Q2 profit.
