S&P Global Ratings has introduced a new framework for assessing onchain lending vaults after deposits in the sector surged to $10 billion. The firm's Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) is designed to evaluate the likelihood that an investor's position in a lending vault could be impaired.
The framework covers six areas: credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance. Unlike traditional credit ratings, the VRA does not judge whether a vault's yield is attractive but aims to give institutions a standardized view of underlying risk.
Market Growth Attracts Traditional Finance Standards
Total deposits in digital-asset lending vaults reached $10 billion as of September 2026, up from $1.5 billion two years earlier. Lending vaults pool crypto investor deposits and deploy them under predefined strategies, functioning similarly to managed fixed-income funds but operating onchain.
Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings, stated: "As digital assets continue to institutionalize, the demand for independent risk assessments that bridge traditional finance and decentralized innovation is paramount."
Addressing Institutional Adoption Needs
The framework could matter most for asset managers, corporate treasuries, and other institutions considering DeFi exposure. James Wiemken, S&P's head of global ratings services, noted that varying disclosure standards create a clear need for an independent framework.
High yields alone can mask underlying risks including liquidity mismatches, smart-contract vulnerabilities, governance failures, or the quality of assets inside the vault. The VRA aims to provide institutions with tools that fit existing governance and risk-management processes.
Part of Broader Digital-Asset Expansion
The vault framework represents the latest step in S&P Global's expansion into digital assets. The company has already launched stablecoin stability assessments, issued a credit rating for DeFi lender Sky Protocol, and rated a bitcoin-backed structured-finance transaction from Ledn. In September, S&P Global announced an agreement to acquire smart-contract security firm Openzeppelin and led a strategic investment in digital-asset data provider Kaiko.
