S&P Global Ratings Introduces Framework for Assessing Onchain Lending Vault Risks

S&P Global Ratings has introduced a framework designed to assess risks within onchain lending vaults. Published on October 4, 2026, the framework is titled "Analytical Approach: Vault Risk Assessments," or VRA, and aims to measure the likelihood that investor positions could be impaired.

The VRA evaluates vaults that pool digital assets and route them into blockchain-based lending markets. Its scope covers vaults pooling assets backed by crypto or tokenized real-world assets, as well as vaults lending against tokenized RWA collateral. Direct exposure to tokenized bonds falls outside the framework's scope.

S&P emphasizes that the VRA is not a credit rating, though it uses familiar letter-grade designations with a "v" suffix. The highest assessment, AAA(v), indicates minimal impairment risk.

Four Core Assessment Factors

The framework evaluates vaults across four main dimensions:

  • Portfolio quality: The assets the vault lends against
  • Liquidity pressures: Whether depositors can withdraw funds on demand, including liquidity mismatches
  • Protocol risks: The technical and design risks of underlying lending markets and infrastructure
  • Curator oversight: The governance and capital allocation decisions made by vault operators or curators

S&P treats allocation caps coded directly into smart contracts as strong risk controls. These hard limits restrict capital flows regardless of discretionary decisions.

Implications for the Market

The framework creates incentives for vault operators and curators to adopt stronger oversight and coded risk limits in pursuit of higher assessments. The evaluation principles underlying the VRA are likely to become benchmarks for other financial instruments utilizing DeFi assets.

S&P's explicit distinction between the VRA and traditional credit ratings suggests an effort to prevent the framework from being misinterpreted as a guarantee of safety.
