A semiconductor flash crash liquidated $51.6 million in leveraged positions across cryptocurrency trading platforms during weekend trading on Saturday. A large sell order on Binance at 21:21 UTC triggered the liquidation cascade, which spread to venues including Hyperliquid and hit contracts tied to SOXL, SanDisk, and SK Hynix.
The liquidations occurred between 21:22 and 21:32 UTC, concentrating $51.6 million in forced position closures within a ten-minute window. Bullish positions accounted for approximately $38 million of the total liquidations, while bearish positions made up the remainder.
Concentration of Losses in Semiconductor Contracts
SOXL contracts recorded the largest share with approximately $12.7 million in liquidations. SanDisk and SK Hynix contracts each saw around $10.8 million in liquidations. Together, these three contract groups accounted for approximately $34.3 million of the total liquidated value.
Conditions Contributing to the Crash
Thin weekend liquidity limited available buy orders to absorb the large sell order, intensifying the price movement. With US stock markets closed, crypto platforms offered no real-time equity prices to anchor contract values, leaving traders to react to each other while leverage amplified the moves.
The liquidations followed a difficult period for the semiconductor sector in regular trading. Semiconductor stocks had logged eight consecutive losing days prior to the weekend event, marking their worst streak since 2008. This losing streak left the sector under pressure heading into weekend trading hours.
Market Structure and Trading Hours
Tokenized stock exposure and perpetual contracts on crypto platforms allow trading to continue around the clock, even when traditional US markets are closed. Perpetual contracts have no expiry date and can be held indefinitely as long as margin requirements are met. However, extended trading hours do not guarantee reliable price discovery or deep liquidity, and they create additional opportunities for trader liquidation.
Prices rebounded quickly after the initial crash, and the wider cryptocurrency markets remained stable following the event.
