Sky Protocol reported $4.4 billion in stablecoin liquidity available through its Peg Stability Module on October 9, enabling one-for-one conversions between USDS and USDC. The disclosure highlights a critical distinction between token circulation, conversion inventory, and actual cash inflows into the broader financial system.
The PSM provides a direct exchange route for USDS holders seeking USDC at no protocol fee or slippage, though routed trades through other token pools may incur additional costs. However, the $4.4 billion figure represents the aggregate inventory available at the time of disclosure, meaning actual USDS exits depend on USDC availability at the moment of transaction.
Supply Growth Does Not Equal New Money
A stablecoin supply increase does not necessarily reflect fresh dollars entering the crypto system. Token counts can change through several mechanisms unrelated to external capital inflows, including borrowing against collateral, token migration, and conversions between linked tokens.
Sky offers a DAI-to-USDS converter where holders can exchange between the two tokens without liquidity restrictions. This means a rise in USDS supply may simply represent existing DAI being converted to a different denomination, rather than new money entering the wider system.
Similarly, USDD, a separate collateral-backed stablecoin, allows users to borrow against pledged assets. While this creates spendable liquidity, the borrowed tokens do not require corresponding new bank-dollar deposits, as the collateral itself secures the debt position. USDD also permits migration from legacy USDDOLD tokens at no deadline, meaning supply increases can reflect an upgrade of existing holdings rather than economic expansion.
Conversion Access Differs From Bank Redemption
Obtaining USDC through the PSM represents only one stage of accessing dollars. Converting USDS to USDC completes the token-conversion leg, but a separate banking process must complete the cash leg.
USDC issuer Circle provides institutional issuance through Circle Mint for eligible businesses depositing dollars into Circle accounts. Retail holders in the European Economic Area have direct redemption access through Circle France, subject to identity checks and an EEA bank account. Circle's policy, updated September 15, allows a five-business-day timeframe for eligible EEA retail redemptions, with possible deferrals during stress events affecting reserve rebalancing.
This two-stage process means stablecoin holders seeking bank dollars must first complete any necessary token conversion, then navigate the issuer's redemption requirements and banking infrastructure.
