SoFi has launched a new product designed to let consumers earn interest on dollar balances while maintaining access to blockchain-based transfers. The offering, called SoFi Earn, introduces SOFIE, a tokenized deposit, and SoFiUSD, a stablecoin designed to facilitate on-chain transactions.
Each SOFIE token represents one dollar on deposit at SoFi Bank. The company advertises a 4.40% annual percentage yield, subject to eligibility requirements and changing rate terms. Eligible underlying deposits carry federal deposit insurance within applicable FDIC limits.
SOFIE and SoFiUSD serve distinct functions within the ecosystem. SOFIE functions as a tokenized claim on a bank deposit, while SoFiUSD operates as a vehicle for blockchain transactions. Customers can convert between the two at a one-to-one ratio.
The deposit insurance protections that apply to traditional bank deposits do not automatically extend to every token, wallet, or transaction on a public blockchain. Users should consider the specific terms governing deposit redemption, withdrawal limits, rate conditions, and the reversibility of transfers once they move on-chain.
The product addresses a competitive gap in the market by offering interest-bearing dollar holdings alongside convenient access to digital asset infrastructure. Financial institutions and crypto exchanges both face new competitive dynamics as users gain access to yield on cash balances without requiring transfers to trading platforms.
