Solana Alpenglow Upgrade Launches October 21, Replacing Consensus System

Solana will deploy its Alpenglow upgrade on October 21, marking a significant change to how the network's validators reach consensus on transactions. The upgrade is scheduled to begin at epoch 1064, expected to start around 15:00 UTC that Wednesday.

Developer firm Anza said the upgrade required 18 months of development work and will activate in a single slot. The deployment covers Votor, the first component of Alpenglow, which replaces TowerBFT, the network's current consensus mechanism.

Faster Transaction Finality

Alpenglow aims to reduce transaction finality from approximately 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds. Finality is the point at which a transaction cannot be reversed, a critical property for high-value transactions and applications like point-of-sale systems, decentralized finance platforms, and trading desks.

Under TowerBFT, validators post votes as on-chain transactions, with blocks becoming final only after 32 slots of accumulated votes. Votor, the new voting protocol, moves votes off the chain, allowing validators to message each other directly and finalize blocks in one or two rounds instead.

If 80% or more of stake backs a block in the first round, it is finalized immediately. If support falls between 60% and 80%, a second round with a 60% threshold determines the outcome. The Solana Foundation stated the design can handle 20% malicious stake plus an additional 20% offline validators.

Impact on Transaction Counts and User Experience

Vote transactions will no longer appear in blocks following the upgrade. This will cause Solana's headline transaction counts and transactions-per-second figures to decline sharply, though actual network activity will remain unchanged.

Regular users do not need to take any action. Wallets, applications, transaction formats, programs, and fees will remain the same. For developers, the confirmed and finalized commitment levels will become equivalent.

Validator Requirements

Validators face a new operational cost under Alpenglow. Each vote account must maintain an additional 0.8 SOL on top of its rent-exempt balance to pay a Validator Admission Ticket, a per-epoch fee that gets burned. Validators unable to pay this fee will sit out voting and block production for the following epoch.

This replaces the approximately 1 SOL per epoch validators previously spent on vote fees under TowerBFT.

A brief transition period will allow TowerBFT to remain active for approximately 5,000 slots, or roughly 18 minutes, before Votor assumes control at slot 459,653,000.

Community Approval and Future Plans

Validators approved Alpenglow in September 2025 when proposal SIMD-0326 passed with 98.27% of votes in favor.

The October 21 launch covers only Votor. Rotor, a second component designed to replace Turbine, the system used to share block data between validators, will arrive at a later date with no timeframe announced.
