Solana has opened a commercial office in Shanghai Tower, located in the Lujiazui financial district, marking a notable presence for a major cryptocurrency project in a country known for strict digital asset restrictions.
The office was first revealed in a video shared by Vibhu Norby, Chief Product Officer of the Solana Foundation. The move drew attention from cryptocurrency leaders who questioned how a top-ten cryptocurrency could establish operations in China, particularly given the People's Bank of China's continued opposition to digital assets.
Solana also organized a promotional light show displaying the project's name and branding on the Citibank Tower's exterior in Lujiazui. Social media reports indicated that videos of the light show were removed from Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, with related searches classified as violations.
Binance founder Changpeng Zhao noted the significance of the development, stating that BNB Chain had not achieved similar access to the Chinese market.
Strategic Positioning
According to local reporting, Solana framed its entry into China as a technology company rather than a cryptocurrency organization. By March, Solana had partnered with Shanghai Hongqiao Alibaba Center to launch the "Shanghai Builder Station" with government endorsement.
Solana is conducting the Solana Accelerate China event across four cities: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, and Beijing. The event focuses on themes including artificial intelligence, robotics, physical AI, emerging markets, and local business development, avoiding direct discussion of token speculation.
The approach suggests Solana is positioning itself for potential future policy shifts while establishing early infrastructure in China's technology ecosystem.
