Sophon has set November 25 as the deadline for users to withdraw their assets before the planned shutdown of its mainnet, the team announced Monday. After this date, any assets remaining on Sophon Chain risk becoming permanently inaccessible.
The project will begin shutting down key infrastructure and related websites on November 25. Users have been asked to withdraw Sophon (SOPH), Ether (ETH), USDC, and other assets, as well as claim any outstanding staking or Guardian rewards.
This shutdown follows Sophon's June announcement that it would abandon its Ethereum layer-2 blockchain and transition operations to Base. The developers determined that the costs of maintaining a standalone blockchain no longer justified its benefits and decided to focus on consumer finance and artificial intelligence applications on Base instead.
Sophon originally launched as a zero-knowledge-powered layer-2 network targeting consumer applications including gaming, entertainment, and AI.
The move reflects a broader trend among layer-2 projects. Abstract, a consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Pudgy Penguins' parent company Igloo, announced in October that it would close on December 15 after the company incurred tens of millions of dollars in losses supporting the network.
Sophon raised $60 million through a node sale in 2024, following a separate $10 million funding round.
