SpaceX Stock Retracts From Post-IPO Highs, Reducing Value of Recent Investments

An investor who purchased $500 worth of SpaceX stock on June 23 would now be facing a loss as shares have retreated significantly from their post-IPO highs. With the stock declining from $156 on June 23 to $136 on August 23, that initial investment would have dropped to approximately $436, representing a loss of about $64, or 12.8%, over a two-month period.

SpaceX completed its initial public offering in June at $135 per share. Following its listing, the stock experienced a strong rally, closing its debut session near $161 and climbing above $220 in mid-June as investor enthusiasm pushed the company’s market capitalization past $2 trillion.

Factors Behind the Correction

The post-listing rally proved difficult to sustain. By late June, shares settled near $156 before entering a prolonged correction, retreating toward the IPO price amid market volatility and multiple lockup expirations that expanded the supply of tradable shares. A primary driver of the selling pressure was successive share unlocks, including a release around August 20 that made roughly 319 million shares eligible for trading.

Operational and Financial Performance

Despite the weaker share price, the aerospace manufacturer continues to report robust operational and financial growth. SpaceX generated $7.8 billion in second-quarter revenue, marking a 92% year-over-year increase. Adjusted EBITDA surged 191% to $3.5 billion, and the net loss narrowed significantly compared to the same period a year earlier.

Starlink continues to serve as the company’s largest business segment and primary cash flow source, with the satellite internet network surpassing 11,000 satellites in orbit while adding subscribers in both consumer and enterprise markets. Launch operations also remain active, with SpaceX completing its 100th mission of 2026.

Investors continue to monitor the long-term potential of Starship and the company's artificial intelligence initiatives following its acquisition of xAI earlier in the year. SpaceX is heavily investing in AI infrastructure, cloud computing capacity, and Starship development to support future satellite deployments and commercial missions, though these ongoing capital expenditures continue to weigh on profitability.
