Stablecoin payments have grown significantly but remain a tiny fraction of global cross-border flows. According to McKinsey and Artemis data, genuine stablecoin payments reached roughly $390 billion annualized in late 2025, representing about 0.02% of the $208 trillion cross-border payments market tracked by FXC Intelligence.
The limitation stems from how enterprise payments actually function. Every cross-border transaction involves three distinct legs: the payer's money moving through local currency rails, the payee receiving funds in their local currency, and a middle leg connecting the two across borders. Stablecoins settle only that middle leg efficiently. The entry and exit points remain tied to traditional banking infrastructure.
Banking Infrastructure Remains Non-Negotiable
Enterprise payments begin and end in fiat currency within regulated financial systems. Payroll, vendor invoices, revenue, and capital distributions all originate in bank accounts and must ultimately settle there. This reality means banks remain the compliance anchor and local access point in every market a payment touches.
The companies scaling stablecoin volume have embraced this architecture rather than attempting to route around it. Stripe's $1.1 billion acquisition of Bridge, which orchestrates banking connections, exemplifies the trend. Citi is launching crypto custody services, and Standard Chartered is testing stablecoin settlement in Singapore. Institutional volume requires deeper integration with banking systems than initially anticipated.
Volume Outgrows Single Relationships
At $50 million in annual payment volume, a company can operate with one banking relationship and one stablecoin issuer. By $500 million, those arrangements break down. At $10 billion in volume, the determining factor shifts from technology quality to the breadth of banking corridors, FX infrastructure, and licensing capabilities.
Brazil demonstrates the pattern. The Pix instant payment system moved over R$35 trillion (roughly $6.3 trillion) in 2025, with B2B transactions comprising 47% of that value. Operating at institutional scale requires BRL settlement capability, local rail access, and multi-currency FX infrastructure—elements built through years of relationship-building with banks, regulators, and local counterparties.
Single-Bank Dependency as Operational Risk
Most stablecoin companies rely on one primary banking partner, creating significant operational vulnerability. Banks have exited fintech and crypto programs with minimal warning. The Silvergate wind-down, Signature Bank's receivership, and FDIC pause letters demonstrate the pattern. In March 2026, the FTC sent formal warning letters to PayPal, Stripe, Visa, and Mastercard regarding debanking practices, following an August 2025 executive order addressing such issues.
Loss of a single banking relationship means immediate operational shutdown. Sustainable infrastructure requires multiple regulated connections, redundant rail access, and compliance architecture spanning every operating corridor.
Compliance as Competitive Advantage
Institutional buyers—CFOs at multinationals, treasury teams at global funds, and compliance leads at exchanges—hold infrastructure partners to their own regulatory standards. An EY-Parthenon survey found that 13% of financial institutions and corporates currently use stablecoins, while 80% of non-users are actively exploring adoption.
The GENIUS Act, signed in July 2025, ties compliant stablecoin issuance to bank-grade reserve, disclosure, and licensing requirements. Even where rules permit nonbank issuers, serious volume flows toward bank partnerships and bank-custodied reserves. Stablecoin companies unable to demonstrate licensing depth, banking connectivity, and defensible compliance lose institutional deals to competitors that can.
Enterprise Growth Accelerating
B2B stablecoin payments reached a roughly $226 billion annualized run-rate by late 2025, representing 733% year-over-year growth. This growth concentrated among companies that built the banking foundation first. Stablecoins deliver value through speed, programmability, around-the-clock settlement, and reduced correspondent friction—advantages that become accessible only once banking infrastructure exists beneath them.
