Stacks Labs Details Direction for PoX-6

Stacks Labs CTO Adriano Di Luzio has discussed public plans for PoX-6, the proposed next version of the Stacks network's Proof of Transfer mechanism. The discussion follows the activation of PoX-5, which went live on July 30, 2026, at Bitcoin block 960,230 following a community vote on SIP-045 that received over 99.99% approval.

While PoX-5 operates in a curated bootstrap phase overseen by the Stacks Endowment, PoX-6 is designed as a fully decentralized, algorithmic end state for the Stacks staking model.

From Curated Parameters to Code-Driven Auctions

PoX-5 introduced Bitcoin staking through protocol bonds, allowing participants to lock Bitcoin on Layer 1 and pair it with STX on the Stacks network to earn self-custodial yield. During this initial phase, the Stacks Endowment manages key parameters, with institutional targets set around a 3% annual percentage yield on BTC and a 5% minimum STX pairing.

The proposed PoX-6 upgrade aims to remove centralized curation in favor of a community-governed framework relying on two core mechanisms:

  • Blind auctions for bonding capacity: Capacity would be distributed via consensus-driven blind auctions, where participants submit bids without seeing competing offers to help mitigate front-running and gaming.
  • Automated yield adjustments: Yield rates and reservations would be adjusted directly on-chain by the protocol instead of by a committee.

Governance and Leadership Transitions

Specific implementation details for PoX-6 have not yet been ratified, and the final mechanics must still go through the formal Stacks governance process. The design and parameters of the upcoming upgrade are expected to depend heavily on performance metrics gathered during the live PoX-5 bootstrap phase.

The roadmap discussion coincides with a leadership shift at Stacks Labs, where founder Muneeb Ali is scheduled to become permanent CEO on October 15, 2026. Until a formal proposal is finalized and voted on by the community, PoX-6 remains a projected framework rather than a finished design.
