A significant security breach at Binance could accelerate a shift in cryptocurrency trading toward decentralized exchanges, according to Geoffrey Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered.
Kendrick said the hack should drive further growth in decentralized exchanges' share of trading relative to centralized platforms. He noted that Uniswap, the largest decentralized exchange by volume, has never experienced any exploits.
DEX-to-CEX Ratio Growth
Data from CoinGecko shows the top 10 spot decentralized-to-centralized exchange ratio reached 23.5% in the second quarter of 2026, up 2.1 percentage points from the first quarter of 2026.
Kendrick maintained a $100 price target for Uniswap's UNI token by 2030, while suggesting the Binance hack provides "another reason why that forecast may end up being too low." His prediction aligns with Standard Chartered's thesis that assets locked in decentralized finance could reach $2.7 trillion by 2030, with Uniswap becoming a key trading venue for tokenized assets.
Short-Term Market Impact
In the immediate aftermath of the Binance hack, cryptocurrency markets declined. BNB fell more than 8% over 24 hours, while Bitcoin traded near $77,000. Decentralized finance tokens also dropped, with Aave's AAVE declining 11.3% to $118.54 and Uniswap's UNI falling 10.4% to $6.48.
Kendrick expects further negative price action in the near term, stating that "only after assets are unfrozen and more detail of the hack emerges will we find a new base."
