Standard Chartered said on October 12 that institutional custody for Ripple USD (RLUSD) on the XRP Ledger is live for eligible clients through its DIFC branch, which is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.
The launch covers custody for eligible institutional clients. Alongside the custody service, Standard Chartered is working with Ripple and LMAX Group on a separate collateral model.
Custody and collateral are separate steps
The proposed collateral arrangement would allow the value of eligible RLUSD holdings to be mirrored to a trading venue without sending the underlying tokens there directly. In principle, that would reduce the need to move assets between custodians and venues each time trading capacity changes.
The timing distinction is central to the announcement. Custody has launched for eligible clients, but the expanded collateral integration remains subject to documentation, testing, approvals and jurisdictional conditions.
Why collateral mobility matters
For the institutional stablecoin market, the concept extends beyond a new exchange listing. Collateral mobility, counterparty exposure and operational control affect whether large trading firms use digital dollars at scale.
The appeal of a stablecoin depends as much on where it can be safely held and pledged as on the speed at which it can be transferred, according to the announcement.
