Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited officially launched a blockchain‑based tokenized deposits service on 18 December 2025. The platform allows corporate clients to move tokenized account balances around the clock.
How the service works
A tokenized deposit records a traditional bank deposit on a blockchain, keeping the money as a bank balance while enabling digital‑rail transfers that operate beyond normal banking hours. The service supports three currencies in Hong Kong – Hong Kong dollars (HKD), offshore Chinese yuan (CNH) and US dollars (USD) – and, in Singapore, Singapore dollars (SGD) and USD.
First client and use case
Ant International is the inaugural customer, using the tool for intercompany liquidity transfers. The platform integrates with Ant International’s treasury management system, Whale, to shift cash between its entities as needed.
Regulatory framework
The offering is part of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Project Ensemble, a sandbox initiative that began in May 2024 to test tokenized money and settlement. As of November 2026, EnsembleTX includes 12 banks and 20 industry participants, with Standard Chartered among the banks supporting 24/7 interbank settlement using the regulated HKDAP stablecoin.
Significance for corporate treasurers
Traditional cross‑border cash movements are constrained by banking hours and settlement cycles, often resulting in trapped liquidity. The tokenized deposits service provides continuous access to funds, allowing subsidiaries to receive cash when needed, even outside normal business days.
Implications for the broader market
The deployment by a major global bank under regulatory oversight signals growing acceptance of tokenization beyond crypto‑native firms. Additionally, Standard Chartered’s role in distributing the HKDAP stablecoin highlights a model where regulated stablecoins operate within the conventional banking system.
