Starknet's community has backed research into a potentially significant shift for the blockchain, but the vote does not authorize an actual network transition.
A non-binding governance poll closed with 93.52% of voting power supporting work on whether Starknet could become an independent, post-quantum-secure layer-1 network. The Starknet Foundation emphasized that the vote gives researchers a mandate to study the proposal rather than permission to execute a migration.
Why Independence Is Being Considered
Starknet currently operates as a layer-2 network connected to Ethereum, inheriting settlement and security properties from the larger chain. However, parts of Starknet's security depend on Ethereum's cryptography, bridge, and data availability.
The Foundation argues that STARK proofs rely on hash-based mechanisms with characteristics that could be useful against future threats from quantum computers. Starknet's programmable accounts could potentially adopt alternative signature schemes. However, the network's current security depends on all system components, not solely its proving mechanism, and Ethereum dependencies remain a key consideration in the independence debate.
Research and Unanswered Questions
The next phase involves a joint research group from StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation to examine technical trade-offs and publish findings. Further detailed proposals and votes would only follow if the research justifies moving forward.
Significant unanswered questions include how assets would bridge between networks, where data would become available, what role existing validators and applications would have, and whether independence would sacrifice security or liquidity benefits currently derived from Ethereum.
For developers, these trade-offs could have immediate practical implications beyond distant quantum scenarios, requiring careful analysis of application infrastructure, settlement assumptions, and user protections before any major architectural change.
The governance vote signals community interest but does not represent a promised launch date or approved economic redesign. Further transparent technical proposals will be needed for stakeholders to fully evaluate the concept.
