Starknet Explores Independence as Layer 1 to Achieve Quantum Resistance by 2027

Starknet is actively considering becoming a standalone Layer 1 blockchain, with builders targeting quantum-resistant security by 2027. The shift would give the network greater control over its security roadmap rather than depending on Ethereum's upgrade timeline.

As a Layer 2, Starknet currently relies on Ethereum for portions of its security infrastructure. Two areas remain outside direct builder control: bridge messaging, which uses elliptic-curve cryptography to communicate between Starknet and Ethereum, and data availability, where state data is published to Ethereum through blobs secured by KZG commitments. Both rely on cryptography potentially vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computers.

Starknet already deploys zero-knowledge STARK proofs based on hash-based cryptography and maintains an active post-quantum security roadmap. A 2027 quantum resistance target would position Starknet ahead of Ethereum, which is targeting full Layer 1 quantum resistance by end of 2029.

The proposal follows recent discussions in the blockchain industry about cryptographic preparedness. Ethereum researcher Justin Drake urged the sector in October to prepare for potential quantum threats through controlled asset migration, while Starknet co-founder Eli Ben-Sasson emphasized that AI advances could accelerate cryptographic risks.

An independent Starknet would need to resolve several architectural questions, including data availability, final settlement, and bridge operations. The network has already developed infrastructure supporting independence, including STRK staking and multiple sequencers. If Starknet becomes an L1, it could continue posting STARK proofs to Ethereum or sever that dependency entirely, each approach carrying different security assumptions for users.
