Strategy disclosed that Chief Financial Officer Andrew Kang is stepping down on November 5, following a short notice period after formally notifying the company of his intention on October 26. Kang plans to resign from his roles as Executive Vice President, CFO, principal financial officer, and principal accounting officer.
The sudden transition drew commentary due to the critical role finance operations play in managing Strategy's large Bitcoin holdings and complex capital structure. Bitcoin commentator Matthew Kratter highlighted the short notice as a potential warning sign, drawing comparisons to historical corporate departures.
However, Strategy clarified in a regulatory filing that Kang is departing for personal reasons and that his exit did not stem from any disagreements regarding the company's operations, policies, or practices. Furthermore, Kang will stay on in a non-executive advisory role through the end of the year.
To manage the transition, CEO Phong Le will temporarily serve as principal financial officer, while longtime executive Reza Virasteh is set to assume the CFO position on January 1, 2027.
The departure coincides with recent financial reports from Strategy, which announced $20.91 billion in Q3 operating income largely driven by gains on its digital asset holdings, alongside a net income of $19.53 billion. As of October 25, the firm held 848,517 BTC, acquired for roughly $64 billion at an average cost of $75,446 per unit.
