Strategy Inc. experienced a major financial swing as a recent bitcoin price rally pushed the company's cryptocurrency holdings from an unrealized loss of roughly $9.5 billion to a $4.7 billion unrealized profit within about a week.
The company holds 840,447 BTC, giving it the largest corporate treasury of bitcoin by a significant margin. The firm acquires its bitcoin through convertible debt and preferred stock offerings. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor has maintained a long-term approach to the holdings, though the company has occasionally sold small amounts of bitcoin to help fund dividends on its STRC perpetual preferred stock during periods of volatility.
Bitcoin's climb past $81,000 brought the cryptocurrency above Strategy's average cost basis of $75,385 per coin. Just a week prior, when bitcoin traded in the low $60,000s, the company's position was underwater by about $9.5 billion. The total cost basis for Strategy's holdings stands at approximately $63.36 billion.
Because of the scale of the position, modest market movements translate into substantial valuation changes. According to company data, every $1,000 change in the price of bitcoin shifts Strategy's paper gains or losses by approximately $840 million. The company's performance has functioned as a bellwether for other bitcoin-treasury firms, such as Metaplanet and Strive, which manage similar cost-basis structures.
Despite the sharp fluctuations, Strategy has not announced any major changes to its accumulation strategy. Whether the current unrealized profits persist will depend on bitcoin's ability to sustain its price levels above $80,000.
