Sui and Alibaba Cloud Develop Stablecoin Payment System for AI Agents

Sui and Alibaba Cloud are working on a payments model designed to allow autonomous AI agents to pay for cloud resources on a per-request basis using stablecoins, without requiring human approval for individual transactions.

The collaboration was unveiled at Sui Basecamp in Singapore. The framework, called Sui Agent Payments, enables AI agent owners to set on-chain budgets and spending limits. Once configured, agents can make individual cloud or inference calls and settle costs in stablecoins.

How the Model Works

The approach represents a departure from traditional cloud billing, where companies receive monthly invoices for aggregated API and computing usage. Instead, each action becomes an individually programmable payment transaction.

The owner maintains control over the total budget, while the agent manages spending within those boundaries. This separation is significant because autonomous payments address a practical bottleneck for AI agents: while software can already execute API calls and request computing resources, true autonomy requires the ability to complete transactions without human intervention at each step.

Why Stablecoins Fit the Use Case

Stablecoins are well-suited for machine-to-machine payments because they operate around the clock, settle programmatically, and can be divided into very small denominations. Sui provides the blockchain execution and payment logic, while Alibaba Cloud supplies the cloud services and computing resources that agents can purchase.

Security and Controls

The framework emphasizes security measures essential for autonomous spending. Budget limits, permissions, and transaction rules are designed to prevent an agent with unlimited spending authority from becoming a security vulnerability. Agent owners define the maximum amount their software can spend before restrictions take effect.

The partnership remains under development with no announced launch date, pricing schedule, or initial customer. The model connects two technologies often discussed separately—agents that need to pay for services and stablecoins seeking practical use cases beyond speculation.
