Switzerland has approved its first retail spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), creating a regulated investment vehicle for ordinary investors that was previously unavailable under Swiss fund law. The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) announced the decision on Tuesday, granting an exemption from standard diversification requirements that allows the public fund to concentrate directly on bitcoin.
The newly approved ETF falls under Switzerland's category of "other funds for alternative investments" with special risk, distinguishing it from existing cryptocurrency exchange-traded products structured as debt securities. Rather than purchasing bitcoin through a cryptocurrency exchange, investors can obtain exposure through shares in a supervised fund holding the underlying asset.
Regulatory Requirements and Protections
FINMA justified its diversification exemption by citing bitcoin's lengthy trading history and comparatively high trading volume. The authority also acknowledged increasing demand for cryptocurrency investment products, noting that additional fund providers have submitted or announced similar applications.
The regulator requires supervised institutions to address operational and custody vulnerabilities under guidance issued in January 2026. Switzerland's Financial Services Act imposes conduct requirements, including appropriate suitability assessments and clear disclosures about volatility and potential capital losses.
Building on Prior Approvals
The decision builds on FINMA's 2021 approval of a cryptocurrency investment fund restricted to qualified investors. That earlier vehicle primarily invested in a basket of digital assets, whereas the newly approved product concentrates exclusively on bitcoin.
Despite the regulatory breakthrough, FINMA cautioned that investors remain exposed to substantial price fluctuations and potentially significant losses. The regulator is simultaneously demanding stronger custody safeguards and investor disclosures alongside the approval.
FINMA has not publicly identified the new ETF's issuer, investment manager, ticker, or launch date, leaving the product details to be announced at a future time.
