USDT Adoption in Developing Economies
According to Paolo Ardoino, CEO of stablecoin issuer Tether, USDT's function as a dollar proxy has scaled globally. Ardoino noted that developing economies increasingly rely on the stablecoin for both internal and foreign commerce, as well as a hedge against failing local currencies.
The widespread adoption of USDT in regions like Africa and Latin America has helped drive Tether's market capitalization past the $180 billion mark. Ardoino emphasized that Tether's mission of financial inclusion is more important than ever.
Regional Use Cases and Trade Integration
Reports from Venezuela indicate significant stablecoin usage in the energy sector. Venezuelan economist Asdrubal Oliveros pointed out that nearly 80% of oil revenue was paid in stablecoins, while Ecoanalitica's Alejandro Grisanti reported that P2P stablecoin-based markets traded volumes representing 75% of national monthly oil exports. Additionally, TRM Labs determined that 90.2% of all listings in Binance's P2P order book in Venezuela included USDT.
In Argentina, stablecoins remain relevant even after the conclusion of certain currency controls, providing users with immediate liquidity and serving as a hedge against local currency devaluation. Meanwhile, following a multi-year crypto ban, Bolivia is evaluating the inclusion of USDT in its financial system. Jose Gabriel Espinoza, Bolivia's Minister of Economy and Public Finance, stressed the need to regulate these digital assets to prevent criminals from leveraging them for money laundering or other illicit purposes.
