Thai Immigration Police have arrested Wu Chaoshuai, a Chinese national accused of leading a cryptocurrency laundering ring that processed over $74 million in illicit transactions. The arrest marks another enforcement action by Thai authorities against regional crypto-linked money laundering operations.
According to Thai authorities, Wu entered Thailand on a tourist visa in December 2019 and remained in the country after his visa expired. Chinese authorities allege that Wu served as an account manager for a transnational criminal organization, hiring individuals to open bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchange accounts to obscure and facilitate the movement of illicit funds. He managed 133 accounts across these platforms.
To evade detection, Wu frequently relocated between different residences across Thailand, renting houses and luxury condominiums in various communities. He also altered vehicle appearances, changed license plates, and used forged documents to avoid tracking by authorities. Thai police discovered him hiding in a luxury house in Bangkok's Ramkhamhaeng area. At the time of arrest, his visa had been expired for over three years.
Wu will face charges for overstaying his visa, and Thai authorities will coordinate with Chinese officials on his extradition. This arrest reflects Thailand's increased focus on cryptocurrency-related crime. In June, the Department of Special Investigation dismantled a separate crypto mining money laundering organization that had laundered over $300 million annually from online scams and gambling platforms.
