Thai Police Arrest Chinese National Accused of Operating $75M Money Laundering Network

Thai immigration police have arrested a 37-year-old Chinese national identified as Wu Chaoshuai at a luxury housing estate in Bangkok's Saphan Sung district on October 16, 2026. Authorities allege he orchestrated a money laundering operation spanning more than 133 bank accounts for a transnational criminal network.

According to Thai police, Wu recruited individuals to open bank accounts and then managed them on behalf of criminal enterprises. The alleged transaction volume totaled more than 500 million yuan, equivalent to approximately 2 billion baht or $70–75 million.

Alleged Criminal Activities

Chinese authorities had previously issued a warrant for Wu in connection with loan-sharking, money laundering, and operating mule accounts. Police allege the accounts facilitated cryptocurrency and foreign-currency exchange operations for criminal groups.

Wu evaded capture for more than three years by using forged residence documents, altering vehicle registrations, and relocating frequently. His visa expired around late 2022 or early 2023. In Thailand, his formal charge is visa overstay; Thai authorities plan to deport him to China to face the outstanding warrant.

Cryptocurrency's Role

According to police, bank accounts held in other people's names served as entry and exit points for criminal funds. Cryptocurrency and foreign-exchange transactions allegedly helped shift value across currencies and borders, functioning as conversion tools within the broader scheme.

Cases involving crypto-enabled money laundering typically increase pressure on cryptocurrency exchanges and financial institutions to enhance compliance procedures and implement stricter account verification processes.

Wider Crackdown

Wu's arrest is part of a broader October 2026 operation by Thai authorities targeting Chinese-linked transnational crime networks suspected of illegal property holdings and online fraud operations. Earlier in the month, police conducted major raids that resulted in asset seizures worth hundreds of millions of baht and apprehended additional Chinese suspects wanted for fraud-related offenses.
