Thailand is launching regulated cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds on its domestic stock exchange, marking a new avenue for retail investors to gain crypto exposure. The new rules for Bitcoin and Ether ETFs on the Stock Exchange of Thailand took effect on Friday.
Under the framework, retail Thai investors can access locally listed crypto ETFs, while overseas crypto ETF investments through domestic brokers are restricted to institutional and ultra-high-net-worth investors. Before trading begins, Thai crypto funds must obtain regulatory approval and establish necessary custody and distribution arrangements.
CoinShares research head James Butterfill expects measured growth rather than rapid adoption. "I would expect modest inflows initially, with tens of millions of US dollars across the first products a more realistic starting expectation than billions," he said.
Comparable Markets Show Cautious Outlook
Butterfill cited Hong Kong as a cautionary reference point. Despite its status as a major financial hub, Hong Kong accounts for just 0.42% of assets in global crypto exchange-traded products. As of late September, Hong Kong held $733 million in crypto ETPs out of $172.9 billion in global crypto investment products.
Existing Alternatives May Limit Demand
Competition from existing investment options could constrain demand for new Thai ETFs. Some investors already access Bitcoin through foreign funds or direct crypto trading, reducing the incentive to switch to locally listed products.
Thailand's MFC Asset Management introduced a Bitcoin ETF Tracker Fund in 2024 that invests in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, the world's largest spot Bitcoin ETF. ONE Asset Management became the first Thai asset manager to receive approval for a Bitcoin ETF-linked fund in 2024.
Butterfill said he had not confirmed either company's specific plans to launch locally listed crypto ETFs or their expected launch timelines. Cointelegraph contacted Thailand's SEC, ONE Asset Management, and MFC Asset Management for information about potential ETF launches but did not receive responses by publication time.
