A new digital wallet in Thailand is allowing international tourists to convert major stablecoins into Thai baht and pay local merchants through the country’s existing QR Promptpay network. The platform, called WORPT, launched under the Securities and Exchange Commission’s tourist Digipay regulatory sandbox, according to a media statement.
WORPT currently supports USDT and USDC. It was jointly developed by Waan Exchange and Wipay and covers the transaction chain from accepting digital token deposits to exchanging them into baht and routing payment to merchants. Under the sandbox model, businesses do not accept cryptocurrency directly; payments are settled in local fiat currency through standard payment systems.
Partners and planned card rollout
The initiative brings together stablecoin issuer Tether, retail operator The Mall Group and payments network Visa, among other collaborators. WORPT is preparing to introduce physical and virtual Visa prepaid cards. Once rolled out, users would share a single baht balance for QR-code payments and card transactions without needing separate transfers or top-ups, according to the statement.
Compliance and everyday use
Developer executives said the setup complies with identity verification, transaction monitoring and anti-money laundering requirements set by the sandbox framework. WORPT co-founder Janeboon Roonnaphaya said the significance of the development is cryptocurrency’s transition toward practical utility in everyday life, compared with its historical perception as an asset for holding and trading.
WORPT executives, along with representatives from Tether, The Mall Group and regulatory bodies, plan to host an official launch event and panel discussion in November 2026 on the future of digital asset payments in tourist economies.
