Tokenized versions of Circle Internet Group shares have grown to 42,200 holders as of October 20, 2026, nearly doubling since late August. The surge reflects growing adoption of on-chain stock ownership among investors who prefer wallet-based holdings over traditional brokerage accounts.
Market Leaders and Holder Distribution
The tokenized Circle stock market is fragmented across multiple platforms. CRCLx, issued through the xStocks platform, leads with approximately 20,800 holders. A Robinhood-linked version holds 12,700 holders in second place, followed by Ondo Finance's CRCLon at about 4,800 holders. Binance also offers a competing product, CRCLb.
The total market capitalization for tokenized exposure to Circle's stock reached an estimated $314–373 million in mid-to-late October 2026. These tokenized versions operate in parallel to Circle's NYSE listing under ticker CRCL, not as a replacement.
How Tokenized Stock Operates
Tokenized stock products are structured to be backed 1:1 by real CRCL shares held by regulated custodians, with the token mirroring the stock's price on a blockchain. Token holders gain economic exposure to Circle's share price movements but do not receive traditional shareholder rights such as voting privileges or governance participation.
A key advantage of tokenized shares is continuous trading availability. While the NYSE operates on business hours, blockchains function around the clock. The tokens also enable fractional ownership and composability, allowing them to integrate with decentralized finance protocols.
CRCLx has emphasized this DeFi integration, with funds deployed into lending and liquidity pools across multiple blockchains, particularly on Solana.
Circle's Dual Equity Presence
Circle issued USDC, the stablecoin that brought US dollar functionality to blockchains. The company's own equity is now undergoing similar tokenization. CRCLx launched in June 2025, shortly after Circle's public offering, providing it an early advantage in the market.
Circle's traditional shareholder base differs markedly from its tokenized holder base. The company reported institutional ownership of approximately 52–68% in mid-2026 filings, which track conventional stock ownership separate from tokenized versions.
Considerations for Tokenized Stock Investors
Tokenized shares offer 24/7 trading and DeFi utility, but buyers sacrifice voting rights and depend on custodians maintaining actual ownership of underlying shares. The 1:1 backing structure is only as sound as the custody arrangement supporting it.
Investors using tokenized shares as collateral in lending protocols assume both equity risk and smart contract risk. Fragmentation across multiple platforms and blockchains also splits liquidity rather than concentrating it, a potential concern as the market develops.
