Tokenized stocks are generating activity beyond simple holdings in digital wallets. As of September 30, approximately $262.4 million of stock-linked assets were deployed in decentralized finance applications across multiple blockchains, compared with around $14.66 million at the beginning of the year.
These figures represent assets actively used within DeFi protocols rather than the total value of all tokenized equities in circulation. This distinction matters as the category expands with multiple issuers, networks, and varying financial rights attached to products that may appear similar on trading screens.
Distribution Across Networks
The growth spans several blockchains. Solana accounted for approximately $95.9 million of the tracked DeFi total, while Robinhood Chain held about $79.9 million. Base represented closer to $16 million. Rather than concentrating on a single exchange or Layer 2 solution, the expansion is distributed across multiple networks.
New Financial Capabilities and Tradeoffs
When stock-linked tokens can be traded in automated markets or used as collateral, investors gain additional ways to deploy their positions. However, this expanded functionality introduces exposure to protocol risks and liquidity conditions that do not exist in traditional brokerage accounts.
Important Distinctions
Not all tokens represent direct legal ownership of underlying shares. Rights, redemption mechanisms, and eligibility rules vary by issuer, making it essential to understand the specific terms of each product.
While $262 million remains modest relative to conventional equity markets, its significance lies in how these assets function: enabling programmable financial activity rather than serving solely as a blockchain alternative to traditional stock holdings.
