Traditional Finance and Crypto Converge on Stablecoins and Tokenized Assets

The boundary between cryptocurrency companies and traditional financial institutions is narrowing as both sectors compete for control over digital payments and asset transfer infrastructure.

Binance has committed $100 million to stablecoin issuer Circle through a private placement of 1.2 million Class A shares at $80.84 each, according to an SEC filing. The investment includes a five-year commercial agreement to expand USDC adoption on Binance's Modular Smart Contract Wallet. Binance faces a two-year lockup on the shares but retains voting rights during that period.

Canada's six largest banks—Bank of Montreal, CIBC, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank, and TD Bank Group—are jointly exploring tokenized Canadian dollar deposits. The initiative will initially focus on transfers between participating banks, with potential expansion to other digital asset networks. Unlike fiat-backed stablecoins, tokenized deposits remain bank liabilities and carry the same legal treatment as traditional deposits under Canadian financial regulation.

Stablecoin adoption is accelerating across borders. Cross-border stablecoin flows increased 77.5% to $220.3 billion in the year through June, even as total crypto market capitalization fell 37% to $2.1 trillion. Chainalysis identified 4,708 new cross-border corridors, with transfer patterns averaging around $3,000 suggesting business use, remittances, and savings activity rather than speculation.

The New York Stock Exchange and Blockchain.com have signed a memorandum of understanding to create a digital alternative trading system offering tokenized US stocks and exchange-traded funds, pending regulatory approval. The partnership includes market-data collaboration through ICE Data Services. Tokenized stocks have reached $3.14 billion in value with 3.87 million holders, representing a 72% increase in holders according to RWA.xyz.
