San Diego County sheriff's investigators have arrested two suspects following an investigation into identity theft and fraud that affected dozens of victims across Southern California and Arizona.
Detectives seized boxes of forged documents, stolen credit cards, and passports during searches at the suspects' homes. Katie Ann Rhew, 44, of Temecula and Michael Sundstrom, 46, of San Marcos were taken into custody.
Rhew was booked on suspicion of identity theft, possession of personal identifying information of more than 10 victims, forgery, burglary, possession of methamphetamine, committing a felony while on bail, and criminal conspiracy. Sundstrom was booked on suspicion of identity theft, mail theft, possession of stolen property, and criminal conspiracy.
According to Detective Brian Bentley, investigators believe the stolen items included mail, credit cards, and personal identifying information taken from mailboxes and vehicles. "We seized a lot of evidence yesterday. There was well over 100 different individuals' personal identifying information," Bentley stated, noting that authorities are still processing evidence and contacting victims.
Bentley advised residents to monitor their bank accounts regularly as a precaution against financial crimes. "You really have to be on top of monitoring your online financial presence," he said.
Bail was set at approximately $600,000 for each suspect, with arraignment scheduled for the following Tuesday.
