U.S. Bank Tests USBDC on Stellar Blockchain

U.S. Bancorp has completed a live cross-border payment pilot between its banking entities in North America and Europe using USBDC, its dollar-backed stablecoin. The transfer was executed on the public Stellar blockchain.

During the pilot, the bank integrated blockchain payments with its finance, risk, compliance, and operations systems, allowing it to transfer funds on-chain while maintaining standard banking controls. U.S. Bank also tested minting, redemption, freezing, and clawback capabilities on its digital asset platform.

The transaction does not confirm a wider public rollout of USBDC. U.S. Bank has not announced broad customer access or a commercial launch date.

USBDC Targets Payments and Liquidity Management

U.S. Bank is considering USBDC for treasury payments, liquidity management, and collateral-related transactions, alongside evaluating digital payment solutions that operate outside of traditional banking hours. The pilot represents a transition from development into a live financial transaction, though payment values and future transaction volumes remain undisclosed.

The bank has not announced plans to use USBDC for cryptocurrency trading or public exchange use, keeping the project focused on banking and institutional payment functions.

Major Banks Prepare Separate Stablecoin Project

The testing by U.S. Bank coincides with growing interest in stablecoins among major financial institutions. Notably, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citi, and Wells Fargo are among 21 institutions backing a separate stablecoin venture aimed at launching a dollar-pegged digital currency in the first half of 2027.

That planned company intends to start with a U.S. dollar stablecoin and study tokens associated with other G7 currencies, such as the euro. Meanwhile, U.S. Bank's USBDC pilot remains a stand-alone initiative, requiring further testing before any potential expansion beyond institutional uses.
