UK Crypto Firms Have Five-Month Window to Seek FCA Approval Before 2027 Regime Launch

UK cryptocurrency firms have a defined timeline to seek regulatory approval before a new cryptoasset regime launches. The Financial Conduct Authority will accept applications from September 30, 2026, until February 28, 2027, with the full framework beginning on October 25, 2027.

Firms applying within the window may continue providing specified services while the FCA evaluates their applications, provided they meet all relevant conditions. Applicants who miss the deadline lose this transitional relief and may need to halt regulated activities until receiving approval. The FCA opened a pre-application support service in July to help firms prepare their filings.

Scope and Requirements

Existing anti-money-laundering registration will not automatically convert to authorisation under the new rules. UK crypto firms, FCA-authorised companies, and some financial promotions approvers must seek fresh authorisation or modify existing FCA permissions.

The framework covers trading venues, intermediaries, custodians, stablecoin issuers, lending services, and certain staking providers. Applicants must satisfy FCA threshold conditions, including prudential, governance, conduct, safeguarding, and operational-resilience standards. Rules address stablecoin backing assets, redemptions, and disclosures for assets offered to trading, alongside market-abuse controls.

Broader Market Context

The approval deadline coincides with expanding crypto access through traditional finance channels. Hargreaves Lansdown began offering Bitcoin and Ether crypto exchange-traded notes to eligible clients on September 3, with investor access restricted to the platform's Advanced Investing service. The FCA previously approved retail customer access to qualifying crypto ETNs in October 2025.

The FCA has proposed allowing certain authorised funds to hold up to 10 percent in crypto ETNs, though this proposal does not remove approval obligations for firms delivering regulated cryptoasset services. Offshore platforms, including established exchanges, must determine whether to seek UK authorisation for covered activities.
