The UK government will place cryptoassets firms under the Financial Conduct Authority’s regulatory framework beginning in 2027, extending oversight designed for other financial products to the crypto sector.
The government says the regime is intended to provide legal clarity for crypto businesses while supporting innovation and attracting investment. It also aims to keep problematic actors out of the UK market and allow firms to invest and create skilled jobs.
Clear rules and consumer safeguards
Officials describe the framework as firm and proportionate, with robust safeguards meant to strengthen consumer confidence. The approach aligns cryptoassets with the regulatory treatment of other financial products.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves MP emphasized the changes’ importance to the UK’s global financial position.
“Bringing crypto into the regulatory perimeter is a crucial step in securing the UK’s position as a world leading financial centre in the digital age… By giving firms clear rules of the road, we are providing the certainty they need to invest, innovate and create high skilled jobs here in the UK, while giving millions strong consumer protections, and locking dodgy actors out of the UK market.”
Regulatory clarity from 2027
The government’s stated goals include legal certainty for firms, innovation, investment and job creation, alongside safeguards intended to improve consumer confidence. Under the plan, cryptoassets firms will operate within the FCA’s framework from 2027.
