Uniswap's UNI Burn Rate Surpasses $250 Million Annually

Uniswap founder Hayden Adams announced on September 8 that the protocol's annualized UNI burn rate has climbed above $250 million, up from roughly $200 million just days earlier.

The acceleration reflects increased decentralized exchange activity rather than changes to the underlying mechanism. The figure represents an annualized run rate based on UNI destroyed over the past seven days, making it responsive to trading volume fluctuations.

How the Burn Mechanism Works

The burn process stems from UNIfication, a governance overhaul unveiled in late 2025. The mechanism routes a portion of protocol fees away from liquidity providers to purchase UNI tokens, which are then sent to an address from which no one can spend them, permanently reducing supply.

Token holders approved the proposal in December 2025, followed by immediate execution including an upfront burn of 100 million UNI. The plan also established a 20 million UNI annual growth budget beginning in 2026 for ecosystem development.

Robinhood Chain Drives Recent Growth

The recent acceleration has a specific source. Robinhood Chain, which crossed $3 billion in daily decentralized exchange volume, accounted for roughly 150,000 of the 184,000 UNI tokens burned in a single recent day, worth approximately $1.15 million.

Three months earlier in June, a daily burn of 134,000 UNI was a record. UNI traded near $2.47 on June 5 with cumulative value from the burn mechanism at approximately $14.15 million. By September, the daily record had been exceeded and UNI was trading near $7.00.

Looking Forward

Adams noted that the current burn rate is occurring without what he characterized as a bull market, with bitcoin trading below $80,000 and ether in a narrow range as of September. The implication, according to Adams, is that genuine market strength could push the burn rate considerably higher.
