The US humanoid robotics market faces significant headwinds from new trade regulations. Market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) projects that US humanoid robot revenue will fall 58% below baseline levels by 2030, attributing the shortfall to Federal Communications Commission rules that restrict foreign advanced robotic devices on national security grounds.

The FCC regulations take effect starting July 28, 2026, classifying foreign advanced robotic devices, including humanoids and quadruped robots, as covered technology. IDC's forecast shows the impact will arrive quickly, with US humanoid revenue projected to sit 41% below baseline in 2027, widening to 58% below baseline by 2030.

These figures measure lost growth rather than a market collapse, comparing a restricted future against the scenario without the rules. IDC estimates cumulative foregone US revenue across all robotic categories will exceed $6 billion between 2026 and 2030, with more than $2 billion projected for 2030 alone. Annual US robotics growth is expected to slow from approximately 13% to 9%.

Market dominance and supply constraints

Chinese vendors currently dominate the humanoid market. According to IDC data, Chinese suppliers accounted for roughly 95% of global humanoid shipments in the first half of 2026, with AgiBot shipping approximately 8,600 units and Unitree shipping about 5,000 units during that period. US vendors are not expected to reach mass production until late 2028.

Humanoid robots face steeper restrictions than other robotic categories because the category is new, models turn over rapidly, and comparatively few units have been pre-certified. Household cleaning robots, by comparison, are projected to be only 18% below baseline by 2030.

Global implications

IDC raised its global humanoid forecast, now expecting shipments to exceed 750,000 units by 2030. Machines that would have gone to US customers are being diverted primarily to Europe, positioning the region as the immediate beneficiary of displaced shipments.

The research highlights a structural contradiction: the US robotics sector continues to rely heavily on critical components from Chinese suppliers, which IDC suggests undermines the intent of the regulations.

For Chinese vendors, the US restrictions close off a large potential market, but the raised global forecast indicates demand elsewhere is absorbing the volume.
