A study commissioned by crypto exchange OKX reveals that while the vast majority of United States college students and parents want academic institutions to teach cryptocurrency and blockchain, social media remains the leading educational resource due to a lack of formal courses.
Conducted this month, the survey found that 90% of students and 87% of parents support the teaching of crypto and blockchain subjects in college. Furthermore, about 27% of students and 32% of parents believe that this instruction should be mandatory.
Demand for these subjects appears to outpace formal academic offerings. A separate 2025 review examining 533 US universities with accredited business schools found that only about 28% actually offered blockchain courses.
Among the students surveyed, 33% identified social media platforms or influencers as their most important source of cryptocurrency information. This figure is nearly five times higher than the percentage of students who cited schools, teachers, or professors. Meanwhile, crypto platforms and apps served as the leading educational source for parents, at 21%.
The findings are based on an OKX survey of 500 students and 500 parents conducted through Pollfish, an online platform that distributes surveys to third-party mobile app users. Respondents were not recruited from the OKX customer base, and the exchange did not disclose the survey's weighting, margin of error, or respondents' crypto ownership rates.
