USD.AI's $1M CHIP Buyback Sparks 19% Rally Amid Elon Musk's AI Warning

USD.AI, a decentralized lending protocol that provides dollar-denominated liquidity to finance AI infrastructure such as GPUs, has drawn attention after its native governance token, $CHIP, surged 19% following the disclosure of a $1 million token buyback.

At press time, $CHIP was trading at $0.05058, up 8.9% over the past 24 hours, according to CoinGecko data. Trading volume spiked 331%, equivalent to more than 70% of the token's market capitalization.

Details of the buyback

A token buyback occurs when a company uses funds to purchase its own cryptocurrency from the open market. In this case, USD.AI used Circle's USDC to buy $CHIP tokens across multiple cryptocurrency exchanges.

According to the disclosure, USD.AI purchased 22,343,372 $CHIP tokens at an average price of $0.044756 per token, spending approximately $1 million in USDC. By purchasing tokens from the market, the company created additional demand for $CHIP, supporting its price given the limited available supply for sale.

Musk's warning on AI infrastructure

The buyback came as a surprise after Elon Musk recently warned of a potential shakeout in the AI infrastructure industry. Musk said more than 200 AI-focused cloud providers, known as neoclouds, could face failures as access to financing becomes increasingly difficult.

He described the situation as "Guppy-level death and consolidation" and added, "Debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn't have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers."

His warning raises a key question for the AI industry: Can companies sustain their growth and investments without reliable access to capital? If financing becomes harder to obtain or customer revenue fails to cover expenses, even companies in a rapidly growing sector could face financial pressure.

Neoclouds under pressure

The warning coincided with CoreWeave reporting $35.6 billion in outstanding debt against $5.5 billion in cash and cash equivalents at the end of June 2026. The company subsequently took on another $4.2 billion in debt in September.

Meanwhile, Gartner predicted that 80% of neocloud providers could shut down operations by 2030 due to financial pressure and fractured business models.

Separately, Maelstrom Fund CIO Arthur Hayes believes an AI bubble burst could trigger government bailouts, increased money printing, and inflation, potentially driving investors toward alternative stores of value such as Bitcoin.

Summary

  • USD.AI purchased 22,343,372 $CHIP tokens at an average price of $0.044756 per token.
  • Elon Musk warned that more than 200 neoclouds could face failures as access to financing becomes increasingly difficult.
