USDT and USDC Dominate Stablecoin Market With Combined $256B in Holdings

The stablecoin market remains heavily concentrated, with Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC together holding roughly $256 billion out of a total $302 billion market, according to data from DefiLlama as of October 17, 2026.

USDT leads with $183.4 billion, representing 60.6% of the total stablecoin market, while USDC holds $72.7 billion. Together, the two stablecoins account for more than 85% of all stablecoin holdings.

Competitors Face Steep Climb

The next largest stablecoins trail significantly behind. Sky Dollar (USDS) holds $6.8 billion, followed by Ethena's USDe at $4.7 billion and World Liberty Financial's USD1 at $4 billion. PayPal's PYUSD sits at $2.8 billion, while Ripple's RLUSD stands at $2.4 billion. No stablecoin other than USDT and USDC has broken the $5 billion threshold.

Expanding Use Cases

Ethena is pursuing expansion beyond decentralized finance through a new crypto neobanking application and a $1 billion secured facility partnership with FalconX for USDe backing assets. World Liberty Financial is deepening payment infrastructure through its partnership with Mesh and acquisition of Bluvo to expand USD1's payment rails.

Circle has accelerated its institutional adoption through partnerships including Visa Direct integration and an expanded Marqeta partnership with Coinbase to bring stablecoin-backed payment cards to businesses. Circle paid out $819 million to distribution partners in the first half of 2026.

Barriers to Disruption

Trust and liquidity remain central to the dominance of USDT and USDC. USDT holds significant presence in trading pairs and emerging-market corridors, while USDC leads in regulated institutional contexts.

Traditional finance developments may reinforce existing market concentration. Wells Fargo's CEO confirmed the bank is preparing for potential stablecoin opportunities in the United States, though new bank-issued stablecoins are more likely to strengthen USDC's institutional position than challenge it.

Regulatory scrutiny presents another factor. A US Senate probe recently found USDT present in 84% of sanctioned Iran's wallets. Tether has defended its compliance posture, though the finding underscores ongoing regulatory oversight of the market.
