Vanguard’s Strive stake reaches $51.5 million through passive index exposure

Vanguard holds 1.99 million shares of Strive, the Bitcoin treasury company, a stake worth $51.5 million. The position sits in Vanguard’s Total Stock Market Index Fund, known as VTSAX, which seeks to mirror the entire investable US equity market.

Strive trades on Nasdaq under the ticker ASST. Once a company is listed and included in the index, VTSAX buys it, whether or not Vanguard has a view on Bitcoin. The analysis describes the Strive position as a mechanical, passive outcome of index investing rather than an active decision to invest in digital assets.

How the stake grew

Before a July 2026 filing, the fund added 269,200 ASST shares as part of index rebalancing activity. That purchase brought Vanguard’s position to 1.98 million shares, worth around $23.7 million at the time.

The share count has since edged up to 1.99 million, while the value has more than doubled to $51.5 million. Estimates cited in the research place the market value of the position between $52 million and $55 million as of late October 2026. The increase reflects both the added shares and appreciation in ASST’s stock price.

Strive’s shift toward Bitcoin

Vivek Ramaswamy founded Strive in 2022, originally positioning the company around anti-ESG investing. Strive later shifted toward Bitcoin. On January 16, 2026, it acquired Semler Scientific, a move that redefined its business around accumulating the cryptocurrency.

Strive’s Bitcoin holdings were reported at about 43,000 BTC. In late October 2026, the company acquired 6,182 BTC for $511 million. Those purchases were funded through equity and preferred-stock offerings, with Strive raising money from capital markets and converting it into Bitcoin. The company’s backers include Peter Thiel and Bill Ackman, and Matt Cole serves as CEO.

Vanguard’s cautious crypto posture

Vanguard has long maintained a cautious approach to digital assets and has not launched a dedicated Bitcoin ETF of its own. Earlier in 2026, the firm appointed a Head of Digital Assets.

What investors may watch

The research points to a feedback loop: as Strive issues more equity to buy Bitcoin, its footprint in broad market indexes can grow. Passive funds such as VTSAX may then need to hold more of the stock to stay aligned with their benchmark, potentially increasing Vanguard’s indirect Bitcoin exposure over time.

The analysis frames this as evidence of growing acceptance of Bitcoin within conventional finance, with exposure arriving through passive channels rather than dedicated product launches. It also flags risks. Bitcoin treasury companies tie their share prices closely to the cryptocurrency’s performance, which can amplify volatility. Heavy reliance on equity and preferred-stock offerings also means existing shareholders face potential dilution.
