Virtu and Tradeweb Complete First Onchain Repo Using Marshall Islands Digital Bond

Virtu Financial, M1X Global and Tradeweb completed an onchain repurchase transaction using a sovereign digital bond as collateral, with settlement occurring on the Canton Network.

The transaction utilized USDM1, a US dollar-denominated sovereign bond issued onchain by the Republic of the Marshall Islands and backed 1:1 by short-term US Treasurys. The bond generates coupon payments while serving as collateral and is structured under New York law as a fully collateralized sovereign obligation.

The parties described the transaction as the first repo combining natively issued sovereign collateral with fully onchain atomic settlement. Executed between regulated counterparties on Tradeweb, the complete repo and repurchase cycle concluded in under 10 minutes.

USDM1 is available through Tradeweb's electronic trading platform, with institutional custody provided by Anchorage Digital, BitGo and tZERO.

Broader Implications Remain Uncertain

The transaction represents a functional use of tokenized sovereign debt as collateral in an institutional financing context, moving beyond issuance and trading applications. However, observers note it remains an early-stage example, and broader adoption across institutional repo markets remains unclear.

Canton Network Activity

Canton is a blockchain network designed for institutional finance, featuring privacy and permissioning capabilities intended for regulated transactions and tokenized assets. The repo transaction follows a July transaction in which Tradeweb facilitated the real-time transfer of a tokenized US Treasury from Franklin Templeton to Virtu Financial on Canton.

Network activity accelerated in August, with FalconX and Interstice launching a cross-chain swap engine connecting Canton to Ethereum, Solana and Robinhood Chain. World Liberty Financial also launched its USD1 stablecoin natively on Canton during the same period. Additionally, Digital Asset and the American Idea Foundation announced plans for a 2027 pilot using Canton to distribute state-administered benefits across three US states.
