Wall Street's Crypto Perps Takeover: Growth in Traditional-Asset Trading

Wall Street is increasingly moving onto crypto rails as crypto exchanges expand beyond digital assets into round-the-clock markets for stocks and commodities. According to data from Bloomberg and CoinBureau, this shift has been confirmed by a significant increase in perpetual futures trading linked to traditional assets.

In August, these traditional-asset contracts generated $778 billion in trading volume across major crypto venues, accounting for 23.48% of all perpetual futures activity. This represents a substantial rise from 0.5% in November 2025. Additionally, centralized-exchange volume for these contracts reached $665.42 billion in August, up significantly from $11.58 billion in January.

The primary driver behind this surge is the 24/7 access offered by crypto platforms, making stocks, ETFs, and commodities easier to trade through crypto infrastructure. For example, investors can use crypto perpetuals to speculate on the valuation of private entities like the SpaceX-linked SPCX contract without owning the actual stock.

Binance accounted for approximately $433.4 billion of TradFi perpetual volume, with the majority originating from equity-linked contracts. Other platforms, including Bybit and Hyperliquid, have also emerged as important venues for traditional-asset speculation.

Through perpetual contracts on crypto platforms, traders can take leveraged long or short positions on assets such as Nvidia, Tesla, gold, or oil around the clock, even when traditional markets are closed. This can result in certain individual stocks experiencing larger price swings than Bitcoin.

If this trend continues, crypto exchanges could increasingly compete directly with traditional brokers and futures exchanges. Meanwhile, the global cryptocurrency market capitalization stood at $2.77 trillion following a 1.2% drop over a 24-hour period, alongside a large influx into the ETF market in August.
