Wealthy "old money" investors are taking a longer-term approach to Bitcoin than many cryptocurrency-native traders, according to Kevin Lee, chief strategy officer at BingX. Speaking at Token2049 Singapore, Lee told Cointelegraph that affluent investors seeking alternative investments display stronger commitment to holding Bitcoin over time.
Lee described these investors as viewing Bitcoin primarily as a portfolio diversification tool rather than an asset expected to generate rapid returns. He cited the example of allocating 5% to gold and 5% to Bitcoin as part of a broader investment strategy, reflecting how Bitcoin's growth has made it viable for traditional wealth management approaches.
Recent data from a CoinShares survey supports this trend. The survey of 2,230 investors with at least $500,000 in investable assets found that long-term appreciation and diversification were the leading reasons for holding crypto, while short-term speculation ranked last. Bitcoin was held by 80% of digital asset investors surveyed.
However, adoption among wealthy families remains limited. A JPMorgan report based on a survey of 333 single-family offices across 30 countries found that 89% had no cryptocurrency exposure. The average allocation to crypto and digital assets among family offices was just 0.4%, with only 17% of respondents viewing crypto and digital assets as a key investment theme.
Lee characterized affluent investors as a largely untapped source of capital for the cryptocurrency market, suggesting that their buy-and-hold investment patterns could broaden Bitcoin's appeal as a portfolio diversifier for mainstream wealthy investors.
