The divergence reflects contrasting strategies between whale wallets and smaller holders. Wallets controlling 100 or more BTC added approximately 43,000 BTC over a 60-day period through mid-August 2026, worth between $2.75 billion and $2.9 billion at the time. The largest holders, those with more than 10,000 BTC, accumulated 46,420 BTC during the same window.
Retail investors moved in the opposite direction. Wallets holding between 0.1 and 1 BTC recorded an Accumulation Trend Score of -0.982, where -1 indicates maximum distribution. The reading suggests near-complete retail selling pressure.
Price action and profit-taking
Bitcoin rose from $62,229 to above $81,500 over recent weeks, a roughly 31% gain. After briefly testing above $81,500, Bitcoin was trading in the $78,000 to $80,000 range in late August. The significant price movement prompted smaller holders to lock in gains, while larger players continued buying.
Market implications
The accumulation pattern means available supply of Bitcoin on exchanges and in actively traded wallets is contracting as whales pull coins from circulation faster than retail investors deposit them.
The trajectory of whale buying behavior remains a key market indicator. Sustained large-holder accumulation combined with continued retail selling would strengthen the case for further price appreciation. A reversal where whales begin distributing alongside retail selling would signal different market dynamics.
