WhatsApp is introducing a feature that lets users connect external AI agents directly within the app. The capability appeared in Android beta on September 4, marking a shift in the messaging platform's approach to artificial intelligence integration.
Users can now set up up to five agents per account through a new Agents entry in settings. The process is straightforward: users name the agent, select a profile photo, and WhatsApp generates an API key that they paste into the platform hosting the agent to establish the connection.
Each agent operates in its own isolated one-on-one chat with no access to other conversations, contacts, or media files. Agents are currently limited to direct messages and cannot be added to group chats or communities. Users can generate new API keys at any time to disconnect and reconnect agents.
A significant distinction between these agent chats and standard WhatsApp messaging is encryption. Messages exchanged with AI agents are not end-to-end encrypted. Instead, they route through a Meta service that acts on behalf of the agent's developer, who can view the messages during this process. Meta stated that this arrangement does not expose chats to unrelated third parties and that standard communications between users remain fully encrypted.
Removed agents disconnect from the account but leave message threads intact. Users can reconnect an agent later, though it requires starting fresh with a new API key.
WhatsApp also cautions that AI agent responses may contain inaccuracies and recommends users verify information independently.
The rollout is currently limited to select Android users in certain countries on beta version 2.26.35.3. A wider release is expected in the coming months with no confirmed global launch date.
This development represents Meta's expansion into agent platforms, positioning the company alongside Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI. Meta previously launched a business agent in June designed to handle payments, bookings, and sales across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, along with a platform for businesses to build custom agents.
