Why Bitcoin Faced Rejection at $82,000 Following a Weekend Pullback

Bitcoin recently surged from $75,000 to nearly $82,000, reaching its highest level since the beginning of the month, despite macro-level challenges last week. However, the upward breakout attempt was halted at $82,000 following renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and technical market factors.

Middle East Escalation Impacts Markets

Reports emerged on Sunday indicating that hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthis had escalated, with reports of drone and ballistic missile attacks. According to the BBC, energy sites along the country's Red Sea coast were targeted.

Saudi authorities stated they intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired at Riyadh on Saturday evening, reporting no casualties and no new attacks. In response to the conflict, the US State Department warned that military conflicts involving Iranian-supported Houthis have the potential to escalate rapidly and advised Americans to reconsider travel to the region. Additionally, reports indicated that political leaders altered their schedules, with Donald Trump cutting short a weekend at Camp David and Benjamin Netanyahu heading back to Israel.

Technical Indicators Signal Caution

Prior to the weekend pullback, Bitcoin had recovered from a dip to $75,000 following a Senate vote on the CLARITY Act and Federal Reserve rate hikes, rallying strongly on Friday and Saturday.

As the asset approached $81,500 on Saturday evening, technical indicators shifted. Analyst Ali Martinez noted that the TD Sequential indicator, which had previously flashed a buy signal when Bitcoin fell to $75,000, flipped into a sell signal. This shift suggested that short-term momentum was becoming stretched as traders watched for signs to lock in profits.
