Why Crypto Traders Lose Money: Psychology Over Prediction, Says Trading Analyst

Bitcoin's recent price volatility—nearly touching $85,000 before retreating below $80,000—has left many traders facing unexpected losses. Traders who bet on recovery suddenly encountered another selloff, highlighting how quickly market sentiment can shift.

According to Glassnode's market report, Bitcoin's futures market remains heavily exposed to price swings, with open interest climbing from $36.5 billion to $37.5 billion over the past week. Bullish traders continued paying elevated funding rates even as prices fell, while spot buying weakened and investors increasingly sought protection through options.

Trading Psychology Matters More Than Price Prediction

Bastian Keller, known as Bitbull and founder of Bitbull Trading and TradeMania, attributes most trader losses to emotional decision-making rather than market conditions. Speaking at TOKEN2049 Singapore, Keller explained how psychology shapes trading outcomes.

He challenges the common advice that aspiring traders should practice with paper trading before risking real money. Keller argues that simulated trading creates unrealistic confidence because traders know they have nothing to lose. Real losses trigger different emotions—fear and FOMO—that override the calmness practiced in paper accounts.

"When it comes to real money, it's completely different," Keller said. "Emotions coming in, FOMO coming in, and then your brain decides what you're doing."

Instead, Keller recommends starting with very small amounts of real money to understand the psychological pressure of actual losses. "You can trade with $10. You can trade with $50," he suggested.

The 'Circle of Death' and Revenge Trading

Keller learned these lessons through his own trading losses. Before entering cryptocurrency in 2018, he traded Forex and experienced being scammed, an experience that shaped his understanding of destructive trading patterns.

He describes what he calls the trading "circle of death": a trader loses money, then immediately enters another position to recover it. When that fails, they take an even bigger risk, cycling into revenge trading until their account is depleted.

"I was one of these guys before," Keller acknowledged. Revenge trading becomes particularly dangerous when leverage allows traders to control positions much larger than their deposits, meaning even small market moves can wipe out their capital.

Market Conditions Intensify the Risk

Current market conditions make these psychological pitfalls more dangerous. The Federal Reserve's October 28 interest-rate decision and the November 3 US midterm elections are expected to increase volatility. A sudden rally can encourage aggressive buying, while the next reversal can trigger forced liquidations, particularly affecting leveraged traders.

Keller believes beginners often make things worse by constantly chasing short-term movements. He encourages traders to consider slower strategies that do not require watching charts every few minutes, rather than pursuing scalping strategies.

Risk Management Over Price Prediction

For traders entering an uncertain period, Keller's advice prioritizes risk management and self-awareness over predicting the next price move. His most practical recommendation is direct: "First of all, don't trust everyone."

That warning extends to trading influencers, automated signals, and market predictions. Keller is developing tools through TradeMania to help traders identify recurring mistakes through trade analysis and AI feedback, though the effectiveness of such systems remains unproven.
