Wintermute Flags Historic Shift: Bitcoin Bottoms Are Getting Less Brutal

Bitcoin is spending less time near extreme capitulation levels, suggesting that the market may be maturing compared to earlier cycles. According to a recent market update from trading firm Wintermute, Bitcoin's latest downturn appears less severe than previous bear markets.

Wintermute noted that Bitcoin is currently about 50% below its peak 340 days after the top. By comparison, losses exceeded 75% at the exact same stage in both the 2018 and 2022 bear markets. The firm points out a clear structural change in cycle bottoms, which have grown progressively shallower at 83%, then 77%, and now roughly 50%.

Furthermore, the time required for recovery has shifted. While previous cycles needed more than 500 days past this point to return to comparable levels, the current cycle shows smaller drawdowns and faster pacing. Wintermute attributes these shallower pullbacks to earlier participation from exchange-traded funds and institutional investors. Additionally, improving market breadth—where profits rotate from one group of investors to another—has been observed.

Market demand has found support from Bitcoin ETFs, which recorded nearly $987 million in inflows last week, marking their third consecutive positive week and bringing cumulative inflows over that period to over $3.8 billion, despite recent daily outflows exceeding $46 million.

Other metrics also point to changing cycle durations. Alphractal founder Joao Wedson tracks Bitcoin's Balanced Price metric, which has historically flagged deep-cycle bottoms and currently sits near $38,400, though analysts emphasize this does not mean the asset is bound to drop to that level. The time Bitcoin spends below major metric touches has shrunk from weeks to about a single day in 2022, while the gap between major touches has widened across successive cycles.
