Social media platform X is preparing to let users trade cryptocurrencies directly within their feeds. According to an announcement by product executive Nikita Bier on August 25, trade buttons for digital assets are coming soon as an expansion of the platform's Smart Cashtags feature.
Smart Cashtags initially launched in January 2026 to embed live Solana and Ethereum price charts directly into posts. The updated feature allows users to paste contract addresses into posts, supporting unlisted or newly minted tokens alongside established assets. Users will be able to view live data, read discussions, and execute buy or sell orders within the same interface.
The initial rollout is targeting iOS users first, with subsequent plans for expansion across other devices. On-chain support currently encompasses assets on the Solana and Ethereum networks.
The announcement follows Bier stepping down from his role as X's head of product on August 5 after approximately 13 months, though he continues to champion the development of Smart Cashtags. The initiative aligns with X's broader strategy to transform into an all-in-one application that combines messaging, commerce, payments, and trading.
Despite the announcement, early market reaction has remained muted, with no significant price movements observed in associated assets as traders await the functional rollout of the feature.
