On Saturday, Aug. 22, the XRP/USD spot pair on Bitstamp experienced a sudden downward move, dropping 37.15% within a matter of minutes. The pair reached a one-minute high of $1.69739 at 05:03 UTC before falling to $1.06689 in the 05:10 candle. The same candle closed at $1.44837, recovering a large portion of the plunge before the minute concluded.

Simultaneously, the broader crypto market underwent a separate, large-scale leverage flush. CoinGlass data published via a KuCoin relay at 05:32 UTC reported $523 million in total crypto liquidations over a single hour, which consisted of $448 million in long positions and $74.76 million in short positions. Wider rolling liquidation figures varied across reporting windows, with a TechFlow report putting XRP's 24-hour liquidations near $123 million.
Substantial derivatives exposure remained present following the volatility. CoinGlass data from early Aug. 23 showed $3.66 billion in XRP open interest, alongside $18.08 billion in 24-hour futures volume and $5.10 billion in spot volume.
